Slow solar charging is different from zero solar input. If the station is accepting power, compare its input limits and charging state with panel conditions before concluding that a component has failed.
Editorial correction: Earlier versions included unsupported testing, experience or performance claims. This research guide replaces those claims. Examples below are calculations, not measurements made by Wild Smart Gear.
Compare like-for-like readings
Panel rated watts refer to specified test conditions. The station display may show input power at a different point in the system, and actual light, temperature and orientation vary. There is no universal “70% rule” that proves a panel is healthy or faulty.
Record panel and station model numbers, configuration, time, shading, input W, charge level and any charging target or input limit. Compare under similar conditions rather than using a single afternoon reading.
Check the likely limits
| Condition | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Partial shade or poor orientation | Place panels according to their instructions and compare input under similar light |
| Station near its charge target | Check tapering, charging settings and the product manual |
| Input wattage plateaus | Compare station input/current limits and permitted panel configuration |
| Hot or cold equipment | Check separate panel behavior and battery charging limits |
| Voltage warning or zero input | Use the appropriate voltage or no-charging diagnosis |
Estimate the charging window
Replacing a hypothetical 500Wh at a sustained net 100W takes at least five hours on an energy-only basis. Charging taper, additional losses and changing sunlight can make it longer. Peak input watts do not predict a full-day yield.
Use recorded input Wh over the available day if the display provides it. Compare energy replenished with energy consumed, especially on trips where driving time or sunshine is limited.
Changes to avoid
Do not add panels in series simply to increase displayed watts. Calculate the complete voltage/current arrangement against the manufacturer limits first, including cold open-circuit voltage. Do not manipulate connectors under load or bypass input protection.
