Solar Power for Subaru Outback Camping

A Subaru Outback camping solar arrangement should be planned for the exact model year, cargo layout, roof equipment and supported electrical outlets. Portable panels used while parked and fixed roof installations have different mounting requirements.

Editorial correction: Earlier versions included unsupported testing, experience or performance claims. This research guide replaces those claims. Examples below are calculations, not measurements made by Wild Smart Gear.

Check the vehicle documents

Read the owner’s manual for outlet ratings, ignition behavior, cargo securement and roof load limits. Roof rating, rack rating and panel mounting compatibility are separate checks. Do not assume all Outback trims share the same sockets or cargo dimensions.

Start with a daily load record

List fridge, lighting, device charging and other actual equipment. Use daily Wh for cycling refrigeration and hours × average watts for steady loads. Check simultaneous output and startup demand separately.

A hypothetical 300Wh daily load and 100W sustained net solar input would need at least three hours on an energy-only basis. Shade, weather and charging limits can make that longer; these are assumed values, not Outback field tests.

Portable versus fixed panels

A supported portable panel can be positioned in light while the vehicle stays in a suitable location, subject to cable length and trip hazards. Secure it according to the maker’s instructions and bring it in as conditions require.

Fixed equipment needs a rated mounting design for the exact rack/roof and road speeds. Magnets or suction cups are not automatically approved driving mounts. Have an appropriate installer assess weight, fastening and cable routing.

Battery placement and recharge

Secure the station in cargo using suitable restraints, keep cooling clear and follow temperature limits. Do not place cables near pedals, airbags or closing surfaces that can damage them.

Use the vehicle/station-supported charging cable or installed solution. Verify driving time can replace actual consumption, and preserve starting capability. No fuel-economy loss or measured overnight runtime is asserted here.
