How We Test Portable Power Stations

Every portable power station we review goes through the same rigorous test protocol. This ensures consistency across reviews and helps you make direct comparisons between products.

Our Standard Test Cycle

  1. Capacity Verification — We discharge each unit at a constant 200W load and measure actual Wh output vs. rated Wh. Most units deliver 85-95% of rated capacity.
  2. Inverter Efficiency — AC output efficiency measured at 100W, 500W, and 80% of rated max load using a precision watt meter.
  3. Solar Charge Speed — Using a 200W portable solar panel in direct sunlight (1,000W/m²), we measure time from 0% to 80% and full charge.
  4. AC Charge Speed — Wall charging time from 0% to 100% measured with consistent input voltage (120V/60Hz).
  5. Real-World Runtime — Running a 65W DC compressor fridge (standard RV size), we measure actual hours until shutdown.
  6. Noise Measurement — Fan noise measured at 1 meter, at three load levels: idle, 50% load, and 80% load.
  7. Build Quality Assessment — Physical inspection: case rigidity, port durability, screen readability in direct sunlight, handle ergonomics.
